Chris Gaffney, Ph.D.

Dr. Chris Gaffney is a principal of .Six Dimensions Sports Consulting as well as a journalist, professor, author, and soccer commentator. Chris received his Ph.D. in geography from the University of Texas at Austin, his M.Sc. in geography from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and a B.A. in history and philosophy from Trinity University in San Antonio. He holds an Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and is a USSF licensed referee.
After playing for the San Antonio Generals of the USISL, Chris traveled through Central America and Mexico before landing in Taiwan where he was the 1997 Taiwanese Footballer of the Year. Upon returning to the USA, he taught Spanish and Geography at Suffield Academy (CT), while leading the boys varsity to the New England semi-finals in his first year as head coach.
Chris's graduate studies focused on the history and culture of stadiums in South America. His book, Temples of the Earthbound Gods: stadiums in the cultural landscapes of Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires is now available from the University of Texas Press. He currently teaches in the Department of Geography and in the Curriculum for Area and International Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He lives in Durham, North Carolina.
