What does DISC stand for?
Marston described four dimensions of normal behavior that he called:
- Dominance - How you handle problems and challenges
- Influencing - How you handle people and influence others
- Steadiness - how you handle change and pace yourself
- Compliance - How you hand rules and procedures set by others
DISC is an easy way of remembering what the four dimensions are and because it's easy to remember you are more likely to use it to understand yourself, understand others and learn how to adapt your behavior based on the needs of the situation you are in and the people you are with.
Can I really learn to get along better with others if I learn DISC?
Yes - you can. All of us adapt our style at one time or another. We can also learn to do this intentionally -if we want to.
Because learning a new skill takes time and energy you need to have a personal reason for wanting to learn the DISC language and then to use it. Coaches like to learn DISC because it provides many options for coaching different players. Also, coaches like to learn DISC because it helps them help players get along with each other on and off the field. Communication between team members is essential for reducing errors during play and being flexible as situations change.
Coaches are motivated to learn DISC because players learn more. Players are motivated to learn DISC because they play better. Teams are motivated to learn DISC because they are more successful.
Sports are more fun for everyone when people talk so others can hear.
Can the DISC assessments be used with teenagers?
Yes. We have reports that are easy for pre-teens and teenagers to read and understand. We have reports that are written for parents, coaches and for athletes.
